Market runs on 82nd and 86th
The Tuesday and Saturday stalls at the 82nd Street Greenmarket on First Avenue offer loose bunches of kale and carrots for $2 each when purchased in multiples of five. A block west, the Fairway Market at 86th and Broadway runs a Wednesday “ugly produce” bin that sells slightly misshapen apples and peppers at 30 percent below standard shelf price. Both locations accept SNAP and the city’s FreshConnect checks, which add an extra $2 for every $5 spent on fruits and vegetables.
Regulars combine those purchases with dried beans and brown rice sold in 5-pound sacks at the same Fairway, keeping total weekly food outlays under $35 for a single adult. The 92nd Street Y’s monthly bulk-buying workshop, held the first Thursday of each month in the basement kitchen, demonstrates how to portion those staples into five lunches and dinners.
Planning around current prices
A June 2026 New York State Department of Agriculture bulletin listed local tomato prices at $1.89 per pound, down from $2.49 in April. That shift has prompted several Upper East Side nutritionists to recommend simple tomato-and-bean stews cooked in large batches on Sunday. Participants in the Y workshop receive printed sheets listing exact gram weights for protein, fiber and iron targets so meals stay balanced even when spending stays low.
Next week the 82nd Street Greenmarket will add early corn at $4 per half-dozen, giving shoppers another low-cost vegetable option to rotate into existing grain bowls. Residents who sign up for the Y’s email list receive the updated price sheet each Monday morning before the market opens.
