Dog-friendly parks that double as social fitness hubs thrive in Park Slope

Prospect Park’s Long Meadow hosted 35 organized dog-walking fitness sessions last month, with participants logging an average of 4,200 steps per outing while their pets ran off-leash in the designated area.

The trend gained momentum after New York City Parks expanded off-leash hours to 9 a.m. daily starting June 1, allowing owners to combine morning runs with pet play without separate trips. Local trainers report that mixed human-and-dog groups now outnumber solo joggers at several entrances along Prospect Park West.

Two spots drawing daily crowds

At the 9th Street dog run, which borders the park’s southwest edge, trainers from the Park Slope Runners club lead 45-minute circuits on Tuesdays and Thursdays that alternate between human push-ups and fetch relays. A block north, the open fields near Bartel-Pritchard Square host the Brooklyn Dog Fit meetup every Saturday at 8 a.m., where participants pay $12 for a 60-minute session that includes agility drills for both owners and dogs.

Both locations sit within a 10-minute walk of 7th Avenue storefronts, making them convenient for residents who finish work on the F or G trains at 7th Avenue station before heading straight to the grass.

Numbers behind the shift

City data released in May showed Brooklyn dog licenses rose 18 percent between 2024 and 2025, with Park Slope zip code 11215 accounting for 2,140 new registrations. The same report noted that parks offering both off-leash access and fitness programming saw 27 percent higher weekday attendance than green spaces limited to one use.

Organizers at the two sites plan to add Wednesday evening sessions starting July 15, with registration handled through the NYC Parks website. Residents can check the Prospect Park Alliance calendar for updates on temporary closures during heavy rain or scheduled field maintenance.
