DUMBO's Five Waterfront Trails Ranked by Distance and Difficulty
DUMBO locals can now choose from five mapped waterfront routes graded by length and elevation for daily training.
How we reported this

Brooklyn Bridge Park released updated trail ratings this week that list five DUMBO routes by exact distance and difficulty level, giving residents precise options for morning or evening walks.
The listings arrive as July temperatures climb and more neighborhood residents seek outdoor routes that fit work schedules without requiring gym memberships or long commutes across the East River.
Two routes stand out in the new guide. The first runs the full length of the park’s waterfront from Pier 1 at Old Fulton Street to the Empire Fulton Ferry section near the Manhattan Bridge, measuring 2.3 miles with mostly flat pavement and minimal elevation. The second follows the same corridor but adds the uphill connector along Washington Street to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade overlook, totaling 3.7 miles and rated moderate because of two short stair sections and a 45-foot rise near the bridge anchorage.
Route details and access points
Both paths begin at the same entrance on Water Street opposite the Time Out Market building. Runners and walkers share the route with cyclists on a marked 12-foot-wide path that the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation widened in 2024. The shorter option passes the Jane’s Carousel and the playground at Pier 2, while the longer version continues past the Squibb Park Bridge and connects to the DUMBO BID’s free water stations at the corner of Main and Plymouth Streets.
The DUMBO Business Improvement District began posting monthly trail usage counts in 2023. Its latest report, covering May 2026, recorded 48,200 individual visits across the five rated routes, up from 39,100 in the same month two years earlier. Average loop time for the 2.3-mile route sits at 42 minutes for walkers maintaining a 3.3 mph pace.
Next steps for users
Residents can download the updated PDF map from the Brooklyn Bridge Park website or pick up a printed copy at the park’s visitor center on Pier 1. Those new to the routes are advised to start with the flat 2.3-mile option during daylight hours and carry water, especially when temperatures exceed 80 degrees. The park offers free group walks on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 a.m. starting from the same Water Street gate.
