EarthLink Launches 2,300 Mbps Fiber Speeds Across Brooklyn's Dumbo

Dumbo already has more fiber than almost anywhere else in New York City: 98.8 percent of households can get fiber internet, according to ISPReports data cited by neighborhood analyses. But this month the company to watch is EarthLink, which now offers the fastest residential speeds in the neighborhood, up to 2,300 Mbps on its highest subscription tier. That's nearly double the average home fiber speed in Dumbo, which sits at 1,247 Mbps.

Why Dumbo's Fiber Matters Now

This isn't just a speed test bragging right. Dumbo is the leading tech and media hub in Brooklyn, with mature fiber infrastructure that already supports 528 Mbps upload speeds, critical for cloud workflows and video collaboration, according to BroadbandNow data. More than 500 tech and creative firms operate within a 10-block radius here, employing over 10,000 people, per the Dumbo NYC business improvement district. Etsy and West Elm are both headquartered in the neighborhood. When a creative agency or a startup needs to move large files or run multiple video calls simultaneously, upload speed is the bottleneck. EarthLink's 2,300 Mbps tier effectively removes that bottleneck.

The neighborhood is also New York City's first all-Wi-Fi neighborhood, with free, public wireless internet offering 50 Mbps connections between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, a feature launched years ago and maintained by the Dumbo BID. That public network handles casual use; EarthLink's fiber handles the heavy lifting for the 15,000 office workers in Dumbo, half of whom are employed in tech and creative industries, according to the Dumbo NYC website.

Dumbo has eight internet service providers offering fiber, cable and fixed wireless options. No DSL providers are available, according to the most recent FCC data. That means every connection here is either fiber-optic or cable-based, giving the neighborhood a structural advantage over much of the rest of Brooklyn. EarthLink's 2,300 Mbps offering stands out not just for raw speed but for what it enables: simultaneous high-definition video conferencing, large-file transfers, cloud-based design tools and backup workflows without lag.

The Brooklyn Tech Triangle, which includes Dumbo, the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Downtown Brooklyn, reports a combined $3.1 billion in economic output from tech and creative industries, per the BID's data. Nearly half of the firms in that triangle expect to double employment within three years. Those firms need connectivity that keeps pace. EarthLink's top tier, while a premium product, signals that the infrastructure is ready for whatever those growing companies demand.

For residents and small businesses, the practical takeaway is straightforward: if you're in Dumbo and you need the fastest possible connection, EarthLink is the provider to evaluate this month.
