Governor Kathy Hochul announced the finish of a $124 million rehabilitation on a key stretch of the Van Wyck Expressway viaduct between 57th Avenue and the Long Island Rail Road in Queens. The work replaced concrete decks, rebuilt piers and added other fixes that officials say will add roughly 40 years to the structure’s life while cutting maintenance needs for Flushing drivers heading to John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The project wrapped up after starting in late 2020 on a viaduct built in the early 1960s. Local commuters and visitors now face fewer delays on this busy corridor, which connects directly to attractions that draw thousands of Flushing residents and out-of-town guests each week.
Officials Stress Safety and Local Gains
New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez credited the governor’s focus on infrastructure that ties communities together and raises resilience. U.S. Representative Grace Meng noted federal dollars from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law helped pay for the work and said the route serves many Queens households. State Senator John Liu said the upgrades serve both daily Van Wyck users and people heading to Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Assemblymembers Nily Rozic and Sam Berger each praised the emphasis on basic public works that keep neighborhoods moving. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. called the effort another step in steady borough-wide transportation upgrades.
The parking lot under the viaduct, which holds 565 spaces for visitors to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Citi Field and Flushing Meadows Corona Park, also received new pavement, markings and curbs. Drainage fixes and new lighting were added to handle heavy storms better.
Project Details and Next Steps
Crews replaced the deck along a 2,200-foot section, repaired entrance ramps from College Point Boulevard, swapped bearings and installed updated traffic cameras and fiber lines. Smaller deck patches using polyester polymer concrete were done farther north toward Northern Boulevard. The governor’s office said these steps improve ride quality and cut the chance of future closures.
Drivers can expect steadier flow on the northbound Van Wyck through the area, with fewer lane restrictions now that the main work is done. Travelers planning trips to Flushing Meadows Corona Park or nearby venues should check the state DOT site for any remaining minor signage work.
