Residents have raised repeated complaints about food trucks blocking sidewalks, delivery vehicles idling in bike lanes, and other day-to-day disruptions that do not rise to the level of an emergency. The precinct’s advice is to file those complaints through the app or site rather than by phone so the details, including photos, enter the system faster and stay on record.
The 84th Precinct covers DUMBO and adjacent areas. Officers noted that 311 logs already influence where they focus attention each shift, and the city is testing a direct link between the app and officers’ phones to make the information available in real time.
Other issues raised at the meeting
Separate reports of mailbox fishing have reached the precinct, including one case in which an envelope containing a check was taken from a locked mailbox inside a building lobby. Officers advised residents to avoid placing mail in boxes overnight and to notify police whenever a check disappears, even if it has not been cashed. They also asked that stolen packages be reported even when a company issues a replacement.
Recent street robberies in Brooklyn Heights involved four victims struck from behind while wearing earbuds. The attackers grabbed bags for cash. Police said the incidents did not target any particular age group or gender and urged residents to stay aware of their surroundings when using headphones.
