Village Preservation and Chamber Programs Lift Independent Shops in Greenwich Village
Initiatives from Village Preservation and the Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce are directing attention to stores already operating with local sourcing and community focus.
How we reported this

Village Preservation named Left Bank Books at 41 Perry Street its Business of the Month in July 2024 as part of National Independent Retailers Week.
The recognition arrives while independent retailers continue to face pressure from closures across the neighborhood. East Village photographers James and Karla Murray have tracked mom-and-pop storefronts in Greenwich Village since 2001 and recorded that more than half of their original subjects no longer operate.
Local sourcing models already in place
The Locavore Variety Store operates as a brick-and-mortar outlet in Greenwich Village and features 700 products drawn from more than 100 independent brands located within 100 miles of New York City. Village Preservation highlighted the store in its July 2024 coverage of National Independent Retailers Week alongside other neighborhood businesses.
These examples illustrate one path for stores that emphasize proximity to suppliers and maintain a physical presence on Village streets. The same preservation group runs an ongoing Business of the Month program that selects independent retailers in Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo for public notice.
Chamber partnerships expand visibility
The Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce works with the NoHo BID to feature more than 150 small businesses during events such as Small Business Saturday. The effort focuses on neighborhood retailers rather than national chains and provides coordinated promotion across the two districts.
Shoppers seeking to support these outlets can check Village Preservation’s Business of the Month listings or the chamber’s Small Business Saturday schedules for current participants and addresses. The programs continue to operate on their established cycles without announced changes.
